Archangel Road

Early Saturday morning, myself, Eric, and Bruce drove up to Hatcher's Pass to sample some late, late spring skate skiing. The outdoor report had told of recent grooming up Archangel Road and curiosity about conditions drove us up there.
Hatcher's Pass, slowly melting out.
Eric skiing the lower portion of the road. The conditions turned out to be less than ideal, a snowmachine had come through the center of the road and rutted it up pretty good. Additionally, the snow was very punchy. However, even with all that it was pretty sweet to be skate skiing one day before May started.
Looking up the road.
The trail maintenance ended at the gate and so did our ski. Bruce and Eric enjoying the respite.
Birch enjoying being outside.
After an excellent ski downhill back, we cleaned up and headed a bit further up the Pass to the Lodge.
Hatcher's Pass Lodge is open year-round with cabins for rent with access to what I've heard is great backcountry skiing in addition to the cross country skiing.
The Lodge itself is fantastic, heated by a wood stove with a great view down the pass. We grabbed lunch and then were on our way back to Anchorage. A great way to pass a cloudy Saturday.
Cheers,
